ce2Times change and so do the attitudes and lifestyles of the community. It is a known fact that the more citizens a society serves, the greater the need for codes and procedures to address the everyday problems of a community building and growing. Often we recognize the need for such codes only after we have reached a critical stage and it is too late. There was not much urgency about building codes until the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Andrew. Then the need for more stringent code was apparent.

The Stuart City Commission has recognized the necessity for stricter codes regarding health, safety and welfare and adopted a code enforcement policy through the City Code of Ordinances, Zoning Ordinances and State Laws which provide for Code Enforcement. Recognizing that voluntary compliance is an important aspect, the City has also provided enforcement through the Code Enforcement Magistrate for cases of non-compliance. Florida Statute Chapter 162 is the statute that empowers local governments to establish code enforcement programs at local levels.

Many times a citizen is not aware that certain actions do not meet the building codes and zoning ordinances. However, when advised most citizens will take the necessary actions to correct violations and bring their property into compliance. The Code Enforcement Division will try to resolve all complaints fairly before referral to the Code Enforcement Magistrate Hearing.
